Transmission Services at Our Shops

Ramona Tire is your go-to source for any transmission-related issues. Our knowledgeable and experienced technicians provide a variety of transmission services including:

transmission repair

Manual Transmission Repair

A manual transmission service is essential for keeping your vehicle in optimal condition. At some point in the life of your transmission, a fluid change will be necessary to keep your manual transmission operating efficiently. Because the transmission fluid naturally degrades over time, replacing the fluid is important for keeping gears and shafts moving smoothly. Sometimes leaks occur in the transmission and a reseal may be required. All manual transmissions require maintenance from time to time. Manual transmission repairs will help extend the life of the transmission and optimize the performance of your vehicle.

Automatic Transmission Repair

An automatic transmission service is designed to prevent unexpected failure and to keep your transmission functioning optimally. A lack of routine maintenance can contribute to transmission trouble. Checking transmission fluid levels is important for keeping all internal gears and components clean and lubricated. Replacing a transmission can be expensive, so staying on top of repairs and basic maintenance is important for maximizing the life of your transmission.

Adjustment and Inspection

A slipping or sticking clutch are both signs that you should have your clutch inspected. If your clutch slips, the friction material on the clutch disc may have worn away, which will loosen the contact between the disc and the flywheel. When a clutch sticks, the clutch fails to release all the way, and leaves the engine in limited contact with the transmission.

Most clutch adjustments concerning a hydraulic clutch involve examining, draining, and refilling the fluid reservoirs. In a clutch check and adjustment involving a cable driven clutch, our service staff will check the cable on the release arm, and make the necessary adjustments on the cables and hardware in your vehicle’s clutch mechanism. Neglecting to have a clutch adjustment or inspection when warning signs arise can cause serious damage to your engine and transmission.

Clutch Replacement

Each time you press down on the clutch, the pressure plate pushes against a flywheel, joins the transmission to the engine, and enables gears to be changed. Over time, the friction accompanying this repetitive action will wear down the clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, and accompanying gears and bearings. If your vehicle’s clutch ever fails, the transmission will not be able to transfer power from the engine to the wheels. If you still experience grinding and rumbling noises after components have been replaced and a clutch adjustment has been made, a clutch replacement will be required to restore full operation to your transmission and your vehicle.

Transmission Replacement

Transmission trouble is a serious concern in overall car maintenance. Taking action after hearing irregular sounds from your transmission can help prevent major transmission repairs, although there are occasions when a transmission replacement is the only option. When the life of your transmission comes to an end, our team will replace your manual or automatic transmission with a quality aftermarket part that matches or exceeds the performance standards of the original transmission.

Ramona Tire Transmission FAQs

How long does it take a transmission shop to fix a transmission?

Generally speaking, transmission repairs can be wrapped up in a relatively short amount of time. For example, our Ramona Tire & Service Centers team can complete tasks such as fluid replacement and sealing in a single day. But not all jobs can be completed this quickly—if you need a full transmission rebuild, it may take three or four days to complete.

Is it better to do a transmission flush or change?

Despite their similar names, a “transmission fluid change” and a “transmission flush” are two different services. A transmission flush involves removing and replacing the fluid in a transmission’s pan and other components. In contrast, a fluid change focuses on draining fluid in the pan. While a flush is technically the most effective option of the two, a fluid change can also replace most of your transmission’s dirty fluid.

What’s included in a transmission flush?

When you get your transmission flushed at Ramona Tire & Service Centers, our transmission shop mechanics will fully replace your dirty transmission fluid with new, clean fluid, and that’s just the start. We’ll provide full transmission servicing, including installing a new transmission pan gasket and transmission filter.

Can you repair a transmission without replacing it?

Transmission replacement can be an expensive and time-consuming process, so it’s easy to understand why you’d want to avoid it when possible. The good news is that we can fix most transmission problems with much more affordable transmission repairs. In some cases, though, you may need a complete transmission replacement. No matter what, you can count on the Ramona Tire crew to deliver your required services as quickly and affordably as possible.

How often should a transmission be serviced?

Your ideal transmission maintenance schedule will vary based on several factors. Perhaps the most important thing to remember is your car’s age. Suppose your vehicle is relatively new and has an automatic transmission. In that case, it shouldn’t need attention that often—get it flushed every 60,000–100,000 miles (assuming it has been designed to need transmission flushes).

On the other hand, older vehicles and vehicles that use manual transmissions will need service more often. For these cars, set up transmission service approximately every 30,000–60,000 miles. And if you’re a particularly heavy-duty driver, consider getting regular service closer to the 15,000-mile mark.

How much does it cost to service a transmission?

As is the case for some other vehicle services, it’s effectively impossible to estimate how much your transmission repair or replacement will cost without knowing some variables—namely, what kind of car you drive and what services you need. That said, you can expect to pay far less for a transmission flush or fluid change than you would for a full-blown transmission rebuild.

If you’d like an estimate of how much you’ll spend on servicing a transmission before getting started, Ramona Tire can help. What kind of transmissions can you work on?

At Ramona Tire, our mechanics pride themselves on being able to work on just about any transmission in this part of California. That’s true whether you use a manual or automatic transmission. Still, it also applies to specialized transmission types such as:

  • 4×4 transmissions
  • All-wheel drive transmissions
  • Heavy-duty truck transmissions
  • Diesel transmissions
  • CVT transmissions

No matter what type of transmission your car uses, the experts at Ramona Tire can help. Get in touch with us to set up service today!

What does the transmission do?

Your car’s transmission is perhaps second only to its engine in terms of overall importance. This component also works closely with the engine—it takes power generated by that part and sends it to your vehicle’s wheels. That allows them to spin, helping you get to wherever you need to go in California.

How can I know when I need transmission service?

A few telltale warning signs indicate it’s time for a transmission check-up. Watch out for:

  • Excess engine revving
  • Strange “humming” or “grinding” like noises when you drive
  • Burning smells
  • Puddles of transmission fluid under your car
  • “Slippery” sensations when you shift gears
  • Delayed gear shifts
  • Problems staying in one gear

If you spot any of these issues in your vehicle, there’s no time to waste. Schedule service at your nearest Ramona Tire location ASAP!

How to find a good transmission shop?

If your transmission needs attention, you can’t afford to leave the task of transmission service to just any local auto shop. The transmission is one of the most intricate components of any vehicle, meaning transmission repairs and services can be highly complex. Because of that, you need a transmission shop that can deliver the following:

  • ASE-certified mechanics. The single most crucial element you can consider when choosing an auto shop is the quality of their mechanics. That means you’ll want to look for garages with ASE-certified mechanics—these mechanics are considered the best in the business.
  • A lasting legacy of customer service. New shops may have a lot to brag about, but they don’t have a reputation that can help back their claims up. Instead, look for a transmission shop that’s been helping people in California for decades.
  • A broad range of locations. You shouldn’t have to drive miles to get high-quality transmission service. Try to find a California auto repair shop with many different stores in the area.
  • More than just transmission services. Even if you currently only need transmission service, you never know what else could go wrong with your vehicle. By thinking ahead and finding a full-service auto shop right now, you could avoid the process of choosing a shop for future repairs and services.

Ramona Tire & Service Centers has been active in California since 1969, and we’ve been helping area residents get back on the road ever since. We’d be happy to fix your transmission—get in touch with our team today!

What transmission services does Ramona Tire offer?

It’s easy to assume that transmission repair is the most critical transmission service out there, and Ramona Tire is glad to provide world-class repairs for local drivers’ transmissions. That said, there are many other transmission-related services you might need. That’s why we also offer services such as transmission checks, filter replacement, cooler hose replacement, and transmission flushes.

What can I expect from a total transmission overhaul?

Transmission overhauls aren’t as typical as you might expect—you can often avoid this service by keeping up on transmission flushes and smaller-scale transmission fixes. However, there are situations where the need for a transmission overhaul is unavoidable. In that case, the smart thing to do is to bring your car to Ramona Tire for this job.

Our mechanics will remove your vehicle’s transmission and begin disassembling it to start this process. From there, we’ll individually inspect each element of your transmission and clean/replace parts as needed. When that’s complete, we’ll put your transmission back together again and reinstall it in your vehicle. Along the way, we’ll use high-quality aftermarket and original parts. Because of that, you shouldn’t need to overhaul your transmission again for quite some time.
