What can I do to make my tires last longer?

Quality tires usually are an investment you want to protect and ensure you get the full life out of. What you may not know is that keeping an eye on other systems of your car can help improve the longevity of your tires. There are some maintenance and repair tasks you can do to make sure you don’t end up in the tire shop before you need to. These include:

  • Suspension maintenance and repair: The condition of your suspension has a direct effect on your tires and their longevity. Suspension struts that are worn and/or in need of repair can put extra stress and strain on your tires causing them to wear out faster. Make sure part of your regular preventative maintenance includes having your suspension checked.
  • Brake services: When you have faulty or worn brakes, it puts a strain on your tires and can lead to them wearing more quickly and compromising safety. It’s important to perform regular inspections of your tires and have routine brake service to increase the longevity of your tires.
  • Wheel alignment and tire rotation: One of the best ways to ensure you get optimal longevity from your tires is to make sure they are wearing evenly and receive equal amounts of weight and vehicle pressure. This is done by checking your wheel alignment and having your tires rotated periodically.

Aside from having these things checked regularly, it is also important to regularly check your tire pressure to avoid under- or over-inflation.

Here at Ramona Tire & Service Centers, we can perform all of these services. We’ll help you protect your investment in your tires and extend their longevity as long as possible. Contact us today if you have questions or schedule your appointment online now.

How often do I need to get an oil change?

The most precise answer is to follow the manufacturer-recommended oil change schedule for your car. Usually, this ranges between 3,000 and 6,000 miles, depending on the vehicle. Newer cars need oil changes less frequently. The type of oil also determines the oil change schedule. Full synthetic oil only needs to be changed every 7,000 to 10,000 miles. Higher temperatures, high-mileage driving habits, and frequent towing also affect your oil’s life.

Regular oil changes are an effective way to maximize the life of your engine. Schedule your appointment for oil change service today with our ASE-certified technicians at a Ramona Tire & Service Centers location near you. We’ll help you determine the best type of oil and oil change schedule for your vehicle.

What types of preventative car maintenance should I have done?

Following your vehicle’s manufacturer-suggested maintenance schedule as outlined in your owner’s manual will help extend the life of your car and improve its reliability. It can also prevent bigger, more expensive problems down the road that could have been avoided. Not following your manufacturer’s preventative maintenance schedule can also void your warranty.

A common preventative maintenance routine you should follow is your vehicle’s 30,000/60,000/90,000-mile service needs, which we provide at our auto repair locations. If your driving habits include frequent short commutes, driving in stop-and-go traffic, or towing trailers or heavy loads, you may need preventative maintenance more frequently. That is why we also perform maintenance at 15,000-mile, 45,000-mile, 75,000-mile, and 105,000-mile intervals.

Depending on your vehicle’s service interval mileage, our ASE-certified technicians provide these maintenance services and more:

  • Inspecting the function of your steering and suspension components
  • Inspecting and replacing fluid filters
  • Inspecting belts and hoses and replacing as needed
  • Inspecting the brakes and axles
  • Inspecting exhaust system components

In between these regular interval services, several other preventative maintenance tasks will help keep your vehicle running smoothly for as long as possible:

  • Following the recommended schedule for oil changes for your vehicle
  • Checking your tire pressure and tire tread regularly
  • Checking the battery and battery connections regularly
  • Replacing wiper blades as needed
  • Replacing the air filter as needed

Contact Ramona Tire & Service Centers today for more information on the recommended preventative maintenance schedule for your vehicle. Our ASE-certified technicians can help you optimize the life of your car.

What do the numbers on my tires mean?

The numbers on the sidewall of your tires are what identify the type and size of the tire. The numbers will always be led by a letter. If you see a “P,” that means it is a passenger tire, which is the type of tire on most cars. If you see “LT,” that means it is a light truck tire.

The next three numbers before the slash symbol are the section width. This is the width of the tire tread. Next, the two numbers after the slash symbol, before the “R,” are the aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is the sidewall height and is expressed as the percentage of the tire tread (section width) that is the sidewall. The bigger the aspect ratio number, the bigger the tire’s sidewall will be.

Finally, the last number after the “R” is the tire’s rim diameter in inches.

For example, if the numbers on your tire were P225/60R16 then:

  • It is a passenger tire
  • Section width = 225mm
  • Aspect ratio = 60% of 225mm. So the sidewall height would be 135mm
  • Diameter Of rim = 16 inches

If you have questions about reading your tires or what your options might be for new tires, we can help. Contact one of our tire shop locations near you today for a recommendation of the type of tires that are right for your vehicle.

How do I know if I need brake service?

It is critically important to have an optimally functioning brake system to ensure your safety. Over time, the friction and heat caused during your brakes’ normal operation can wear down the braking components.

Get brake service done at the first sign of trouble to prevent further problems. There are several clear indicators that will alert you when it’s time to bring your car in. These include:

  • Hearing a squealing sound when braking
  • Feeling a grinding in the brake pedal when in use
  • Feeling your vehicle pull to one side when braking
  • A “spongy” brake pedal, which is when your brake pedal presses down too easily
  • The brake system or brake fluid service indicator light is illuminated on the dashboard

If you’re experiencing any of these signs, schedule your appointment online or call your local Ramona Tire & Service Centers location to have your brakes inspected and serviced immediately.

How often should I have my car AC serviced?

Have your vehicle’s AC system checked at least once per year, especially before our warmest weather arrives. Without regular maintenance, a vehicle’s AC system loses about 5% of its original efficiency every year. Having your system checked regularly will help make sure it is running as it should and prevent more costly car AC repair in the future.

There are things to look out for that may mean you need to bring your vehicle in for AC system diagnostics and repair as soon as you can. Things like:

  • An unusual amount of noise while the AC is running
  • An abnormal odor from your AC vents
  • Your AC blowing stale air instead of cool air

Ramona Tire & Service Centers can annually inspect your AC system, identify and solve any current issues through an AC diagnostic test, and tell you what type of car AC repair you may need. Schedule an appointment at a location near you to make sure you stay cool!
