Protect your engine with regular oil changes

Changing the oil and filter in your  vehicles regularly is critical to an engine’s performance. Dirty, thinning oil or a clogged filter can damage an engine before you know it’s happening. Soon, permanent damage is being done to the most important part of a vehicle.

The general recommendation is to change the oil in your vehicles every 3,000 miles or every three months. Other things can affect this schedule, though, are your driving patterns and habits. Let our technicians help you determine what’s the schedule that is best for your car and situation.

An oil change accomplishes the following:

  • The new oil is free of dirt, debris, and other contaminants.
  • It redistributes and absorbs excess heat buildup
  • It protects the engine from rust and corrosion
  • The new oil coats all parts of the engine

Ramona Tire’s technicians will recommend the oil that should be used in your engine. This is based on how old your vehicle is and how it is driven. We use Valvoline oil which will give your car the best protection available.

Cars today are being driven longer than in the past. Any vehicle with more than 75,000 miles on it will last even longer if a high-mileage blend of synthetic and conventional oil is used every oil change.

Our oil change coupons will give you even more value for your money.

Check for these signs that your car needs an oil change

Check the oil in your car every other gas fill-up. Watch for these signs that mean you are past due for oil service.

  • Flecks on the dipstick.
  • Darker than normal oil.
  • Low oil level on the dipstick.
  • Unusual or loud noises.
  • The “ check engine” light is on.

FAQs

How often do I need oil change service for my vehicle?

The guidelines for getting oil changes have changed since the long-standing recommendation of “every 3,000 miles or three months.” Today’s cars have engines that are more efficient, plus oils are of higher quality. This means that oil changes aren’t needed as often as they were 50 years ago. Newer vehicles can go 5,000 to 7,500 miles before an oil change, especially if the car uses synthetic oil.

Whether you prefer to give your engine maximum protection with oil changes at the 3,000-mile mark or you can go longer between oil change service, the professional technicians at Ramona Tire in Moreno Valley are ready to take care of it.

Does the oil filter need to be changed each time, too?

Much like the frequency of oil changes, it might be easier to have it changed every time you have the oil changed. This takes the guesswork out of the schedule from one oil change to the next. Car manufacturers will sometimes recommend changing the filter every other oil change; check your owner’s manual for your make and model of car or ask our Moreno Valley oil change experts for their recommendation.

What kind of oil does my car need?

Oil needs to be thin enough to start the car in cold temperatures and thick enough to hold up under hot temperatures. This calls for multi-grade/multi-viscosity oil for many types of cars and trucks. This oil works well in changing climates and has additives that keep the oil from thinning out as it heats up. An example is a 5W-30 oil which gives better performance in both cold and heat.

Either 5W30 or 5W40 are used in most modern engines. They are thinner, which helps the engine start easily, and can circulate quickly after it starts. It also gives better fuel consumption.

Older cars, however, were designed to work with 10W30 or 10W40 oil. Cars that have 100,000 miles or more need a 20W50 oil.

The choice of which oil to use is one that our mechanic can help you with, too.

What is the difference between conventional oil and synthetic oil?

Just as its name implies, synthetic oil is made in a lab using chemical compounds that are artificially made. It is a substitute for conventional oil that is refined from the natural resource, petroleum. Synthetic oil has superior mechanical and chemical properties and protects a car engine to a higher degree than conventional oil.

Synthetic oil also has higher viscosity levels, is resistant to oxidation and thermal breakdown, and helps eliminate oil sludge. The result of this is better fuel efficiency and increased horsepower through reduced engine drag.

The most commonly used oil is conventional oil. It works well for light-duty, late-model cars that have a simple engine design and low to average mileage.

What can I expect during an oil change?

A full-service oil change includes much more than the name implies. It does include draining the old oil and replacing it with new oil, a new oil filter, and lubrication of the chassis. But another reason regular oil changes are so critical to protecting your car are the additional services included. These services can alert the mechanic to any minor repairs that will save you money and time in the future.

  • Power steering fluid
