FAQs

Why Do Tires Need to Be Rotated?

The front and rear tires are affected differently as you drive. The result of this is that the tires wear differently, too. Your driving habits also play a role in how your tires wear. Routinely taking fast curves or carrying a lot of weight in the rear of the car can cause uneven wear. Having your tires rotated on a regular basis can help the tread on each tire wear more evenly and give your passengers a smoother ride. It’s also a safety issue since uneven wear can create an unstable driving surface and make tires more prone to blowouts.

There’s no set tire rotation schedule that works for every type of vehicle and/or driver, so check with your Ramona Riverside tire shop to have our tire technicians determine how often you should have this service.

Is Balancing Tires Part of Rotating Them?

Tire balancing and tire rotation are two separate tasks. While rotating tires means moving them from front to back, balancing tires ensures that the tire assembly on each wheel is distributed evenly. Specialized equipment is used to balance tires, combined with small weights and positioning.
Each time you get the tires rotated at a tire shop, balancing should be done, too. In between, have the balance checked if your car shakes during driving. This may indicate one or more tires have become unbalanced, they need to be rotated, or both.

Is There a Standard Pressure for Tires?

There is a range of recommended pressure (which is measured in pounds per square inch or PSI) of 30 to 35 PSI. However, it’s important to find your car’s specific recommended pressure set by the manufacturer. You can see this in the owner’s manual or printed on a label inside the vehicle’s door or glovebox.

What Is TPMS?

TPMS stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System. Vehicles with a TPMS give you an automatic alert when your tire pressure falls below recommended levels. There is an indicator light on the dashboard when a tire needs more air and it also has an alert for overinflation. Most cars made after 2006 have the TPMS system.

Is Low Tire Pressure Easily Seen?

A tire can lose more than 50% of its air before it is noticeable. Because of this, it’s good to get into the habit of checking your car’s tire pressure yourself every month. Make sure your tire gauge is accurate. Check in the morning before you have driven so you get an accurate reading.

When Can a Tire Be Repaired?

One thing most people don’t know is that before determining whether a tire can be repaired, it has to be removed from the wheel. Some signs of damage are only visible from the inside of the tire.

Here are the guidelines for repairing vs replacing a tire:

Tire repair is generally allowable if there’s a puncture in the tread area and it’s less than ¼ of an inch (6 mm).
Punctures in the shoulder—the area between the outside of the tread of the tire and the sidewall—or on the sidewall itself cannot be repaired.

Large punctures, gashes, or cuts longer than ¼ inch cannot be repaired.
Any cut that slices into the tire’s steel belt requires replacement of the tire since it will be unsafe.
A tire is not safe to repair if any new damage is in the same area as a previously repaired area.

Where Do New Tires Go: On The Front Or The Back?

If you can only replace two tires, it is recommended to place the new tires on the rear of the vehicle. This gives the car maximum stability.
